Day 22 & 23. Astorga- Rananal to El Acebo

Leaving  Astorga the first thought in my head was "we're not in Kansas any more."  It's a famous line from "The Wizard of Oz."  You can see, we are not in the "meseta" any more. We have left the flat farmlands that reminded me of home and now are in more mountainous terrain with blooming heather, pine tree forests and great views.

In Rabanal del Camino I was admiring the view and I thought I saw something coming closer.  I realized they were animals. Still coming closer, I watched as they came up to the fence.  Sheep!  A lot of sheep. Some had bells around their necks so they were noisy.
They were herded by a very protective, yet unusual sheep dog.

Today was the climb to Cruz del Ferro. It is the highest point on the Camino. Many people bring a stone from there home to place on the pile. I am putting my stone from SK and one for my friend at the very top.
People bring other momentos to leave on the mountain top as a symbol of leaving a burden behind or remembering a loved one. I saw so many different objects such as pictures, ribbons, cigarettes, crutches

and even shoes.

I left behind the pain in my leg.  Had a great day walking pain free for the 16k and only 227k left to Santiago.

Let's hope it continues.

Buen Camino
