Join the Adventure!

Hi Grade 3 and 4 class!

I am Miss Town's mom and I am going to walk across northern Spain.  Miss Town thought you would like to follow my adventure so I will share my travels with you on this blog.

I am walking with my friend Sallie who is from Louisville, Kentucky in the United States.  You will be able to find this city on a North American map.  We have been planning this trip for two years and training for 1 year.  You ask, why do you have to train?  Well, we will be walking 12 to 15 miles a day with a backpack so it is very important that you can carry weight on your back.  Deciding what you really need is not so easy when you are going to be away for 6 weeks.  I have packed and repacked my bag several times.  I am finally ready to start the adventure.

Here we are on one of our training hikes.  We stopped for breakfast.  You have to eat when you walk so far.

The "walk" we are taking is called the Camino de Santiago de Compestela, a pilgrimage path that is over 1000 years old.  We will see buildings that were built in 500AD!!  Do you know how old that is?  Thousands of people a year walk the "El Camino" or "The Way" and there are different paths to choose from.  I am walking the Camino de Frances, which is the most popular path.  If you go to this website you will see all the routes that go to Santiago de Compostela.

I will be starting in Pamplona, going through Logono, Burgos, Leon, Astorga and finally Santiago de Compostela.  Can you find those cities on the map?  How many kilometers will I be walking?  I am sure Miss Town will ask those questions.

So, my trip begins tomorrow, Tuesday, April 16th.  If you choose to follow me make sure you get a good night sleep because we have a big day ahead.  Our flight leaves at 1:50 PM from Saskatoon and we fly to Calgary, Alberta; Frankfurt, Germany; and arrive  Wednesday, April 17th at 3:45 PM in Madrid, Spain.  Remember to keep your backpack light and to bring your toothbrush.

Buen Camino,

Mrs. Town

  2. Hi Mom!...We have a few questions from our curious class
    1) What types of things made the cut into your backpack?
    2) Do you sleep outside in a tent?
    3) What places are you excited to stop at?
    4) Will you be climbing mountains?
    5) What type of training have you done?
